Nicaragua Limoncillo Matagalpa

Our importer in San Francisco is known as “The Queen of Quality”. Here is her description of Nicaragua Limoncillo Matagalpa “For many years Dr. Mierisch practiced medicine here in the states due to the difficulties at home in Nicaragua. When peace finally arrived, he and his family returned to Matagalpa, where he continues to operate a small clinic for the local people. In addition he has been restoring the fincas previously owned by his parents and his wife’s family. Neglected during the long years of turmoil, they have required careful husbandry and a lot of care, but are now producing gorgeous coffee again. Both farms are employing local people, even to the exclusion of electric sorters so that more of what the coffee brings goes back into the community. Nicaragua slipped from the American coffee consciousness during the war and embargo, and only old coffee hands remember the fine Matagalpas and Jinotengas for which the country was once rightly famous. We have arranged to bring in the whole production of Nicaragua Matagalpa Limoncillo again this year, as we have each year since we cupped it while judging the Cup of Excellence contest in Nicaragua. (Because Erwin Mierisch is intimately involved in the Cup of Excellence his family’s coffee has not competed, but it impressed us the minute we cupped it!) This exceptional coffee, lovingly grown and tendered under the shade in the highlands north of Managua, has continued to delight us with its rich aroma and lingering finish.”
